How can families participate?

Families and carers can share their views through surveys, talking in a group with family members, talking to a DECYP staff member, or by responding to a discussion paper. They will be rewarded with a gift card as a thank you.

FAQ’s

What is in the sign-up form?

  • We are providing different ways for people to participate
  • Use this form to let us know how you want to get involved.

Who will see my answers?

The Child Advocate team will see your answers as well as the Team reviewing the Youth Justice Act 1997 to help change the youth justice system.

But if there is anyone you do not want to share your answers with, you can let the Child Advocate team know at the end of the sign-up form.

How long will it take to fill in the sign-up form?

  • It will take you about 5 minutes to complete the sign-up form. It could take longer if you do it with support from an adult and talk about your answers as you go.
  • Answers will only be saved once you’ve submitted the sign-up form.

What will I get paid for?

  • You will get paid for your time as part of the Youth Justice Advisory Group.
  • You will receive a gift card for participating in the following:
    • Fill in a short survey – by yourself or with your youth worker
    • Talk one-on-one with a facilitator and your youth worker
    • Talk in a once-off group discussion with facilitators
  • You will not get paid for registering your interest through the sign-up form.

Do I have to be part of the Youth Justice Advisory Group to give feedback?

Nope! You can still share your ideas without joining the group. You can fill out a separate survey or talk in a once-off group about the changes. You can let us know which option works best for you in the sign-up form above.

About the Youth Justice Advisory Group?

This group is for people up to the age of 25 who have experience of Youth Justice Services in Tasmania. The group will be set up in 2026 and meet regularly throughout the year. If you join the group, your ideas will inform changes across Youth Justice services. The group will be supported by the Department’s Child & Youth Empowerment team and be chaired by someone independent of the Department.

How do I get selected to be part of Youth Justice Advisory Group?

Fill in the sign-up form linked above and express your interest to join the group. We will contact you early in 2026 to talk to you about how you can be involved.

What if I change my mind?

You can change your mind at any time about being part of the Youth justice Advisory Group or sharing your views another way. All you need to do is let us know.
