The Tasmanian Government has released the Masterplan for the new Tasmanian Youth Justice Facility.

The new facility will be located in Pontville and will replace the existing Ashley Youth Detention Centre.

Consultation on the Masterplan is now open, with feedback being sought on the proposed design.

The development of the Masterplan is the first step in the design process and incorporates design features that reflect best practice in youth justice facilities. It also prioritises a therapeutic model of care and is focused on rehabilitation and intensive intervention for young people in detention.

The purpose of the facility is to provide:

  • A safe, secure and rehabilitative facility for children and young people.
  • A facility where healing and wellbeing is the primary focus.
  • An environment where children and young people are supported to address their offending behaviour and successfully return to the community as positive, contributing members of society.
  • An environment where children, young people, staff and visitors feel safe and supported.
  • The community with confidence that children and young people in detention are in a safe, purpose-built facility that provides a high standard of care and rehabilitation support.

A new youth justice facility is important for the young people we support and will also deliver on relevant recommendations in the Commission of Inquiry Report.

The consultation on the Masterplan will be open until 25 May. Following this, final recommendations will be made based on the feedback to support progress towards the project’s detailed planning stages.
