About the Young Archies

Awards are presented in year categories for the best portrait of a person created by a student during the 12 months before the closing date. Portraits can be in any 2D media, such as a drawing, painting, or collage, and must be of someone personally known to the student.

All entries receive a Certificate of Participation and prizes are awarded for:

  • Category winners ($100)
  • Overall Primary Winner (Kindergarten to Year 6 – $150)
  • Tony Woodward Award (Overall Secondary Winner – Year 7 to Year 12 – $150)
  • Packing Room Prize ($100)
  • People’s Choice Award & UTAS Student’s Choice Award
  • Department for Education, Children and Young People – Secretary’s Award ($100)
  • Commissioner for Children and Young People’s Award ($100)

2025 Young Archies Awards

Open to Tasmanian Government schools and colleges, the Young Archies Awards is a portrait competition based on the famous Archibald Prize.

Award winners will be notified in the week leading up to the Young Archies Awards presentations via their school.

Young Archies Exhibition

All artworks will be exhibited in Hobart at the UTAS School of Creative Arts and Media.

Following this, a touring exhibition of the 2025 Young Archies Awards prize recipients will visit Launceston and the North-West.

Hobart Exhibition

  • Address: UTAS School of Creative Arts & Media, Hunter Street
  • Dates: Thursday 25 August – Friday 7 September 2025
  • Opening times: 11.00pm-4.00pm
  • Exhibition of all artworks

Launceston Exhibition

  • Address: Launceston Library, Level 2 Learn Floor, Civic Square
  • Dates: Tuesday 16 September – Saturday 4 October 2025

North West Exhibition

  • Address: Burnie Library, 30 Alexander St, Burnie TAS 7320
  • Dates: Tuesday 6 October – Saturday 25 October 2024
