Key information

The Tasmanian Government is inviting Expression of Interest from ECEC providers and services that may be interested in establishing new ECEC facilities/services on Tasmanian government school sites, subject to approval.

The Expression of Interest will be open for a period of six weeks, closing at 5pm on 20 June 2025.

Access to Government Land for ECEC Commitment

The Tasmanian Government recognises the challenges faced by many Early Childhood Education and Care (ECEC) services in Tasmania and acknowledges the critical role the ECEC sector plays in supporting children and their families during the vital early years of a child’s life.

As part of its 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania’s Future: More Quality Childcare and Early Education for Tasmanian Families, the Tasmanian Government is implementing its commitment to:

  • Audit government land and release surplus land for the provision and expansion of new early childhood education and care services.

Expression of Interest

The purpose of this Expression of Interest (EOI) process is for the Tasmanian Government to determine the interest of ECEC providers and services in utilising land on government school sites to develop new ECEC facilities.

This process seeks feedback from ECEC providers and services on:

  • particular sites and areas where the opportunities would be  most viable and attractive, and
  • ECEC market interest in the proposed conditions for the use of land, including some indicative legal and financial parameters.

The Tasmanian Government is inviting EOIs from ECEC providers and services that may be interested in establishing new ECEC facilities/services on Tasmanian government school sites, subject to approval.

Reponses to the EOI process may be provided via an electronic form at Access to Government Land for ECEC – Expression of Interest or via direct correspondence to DECYP at landaccess@decyp.tas.gov.au

At any time throughout the process, questions and comments may also be emailed directly to landaccess@decyp.tas.gov.au

Initial audit of government school sites

In 2024, the Department for Education, Children and Young People (DECYP) undertook an audit of all government school sites to identify those that may be suitable for co-located Early Childhood Education and Care (ECEC) services.

The audit provided information on potentially suitable land based on land size and regulatory requirements for ECEC facilities.

DECYP wishes to hear from ECEC providers and services on their interest in potential school sites identified through the audit and on any other locations in Tasmania where the use of suitable land on government school sites would be attractive for the development of new ECEC.

The Tasmanian Government is inviting EOIs from ECEC providers and services in relation to the identified school sites. The Government is also keen to hear from providers and services about any other locations in Tasmania where potentially suitable land on government school sites would be attractive for the development of new ECEC facilities.

Timeframes and next steps

The EOI process will be open for a period of six weeks, closing at 5 pm AEST on 20 June 2025.

Following review of the EOI responses, further information will be communicated to the ECEC sector on opportunities for access to government land for ECEC and the process to partnering with ECEC providers.
