The program is preparing for its pilot phase in 2026, with broader rollout planned for 2027.

Tasmania has $30 billion in infrastructure projects in the works, meaning the building and construction sector is growing fast.  The timing couldn’t be better for young people to discover the diverse career opportunities on offer.

youthBuild is more than just career exploration. It’s an investment in Tasmania’s future workforce.

By helping young people discover their potential while meeting critical industry needs, programs like this are essential for ensuring the next generation is ready to build Tasmania’s future.

From teacher to trades champion

Ryan, the newly appointed youthBuild Program Manager, brings a unique perspective to the role.

He started as an upper primary teacher, but is also qualified in electrotechnology and structural landscaping.

“My heart has always been on guiding young people through life,” Ryan says.

“The chance to join the HIA as their youthBuild Program Manager is a perfect fit.
I can combine my passion, skills and experience in guiding young people towards employment”.

Real skills, real opportunities

youthBuild is all about the doing. Students step outside the classroom to get hands-on experience across various construction trades.

They hear directly from tradespeople about their career journeys, and develop the practical skills that employers are looking for.

“We take students beyond the traditional classroom into real-world environments,” Ryan explains.

“Students choose one or two trades each term, learn what is involved in the job and how they can follow the pathway from an apprenticeship to a career.  At the same time, they gain practical experience from real tradies sharing their insights.”

Building Communities and Confidence

youthBuild’s unique difference is its community focus. Students work on meaningful projects that benefit their local communities, developed in partnership with schools and local tradespeople.

This gives young people the chance to see the results of their work while building valuable skills at the same time.

Meeting industry demand

The program comes at a crucial time for Tasmania’s construction sector. With an ageing workforce and increasing demand for housing, there’s never been a better time for young people to consider this career path.

“Employers want more than just skills – they want young people who show up, stay safe, and are keen to learn,” Ryan says.

“youthBuild helps young people understand what it really means to be job-ready – showing up on time, knowing how to stay safe, looking after tools, and being open to learning.”

Designed for every learner

The youthBuild program is designed for all students, no matter how they learn best.

Its approach particularly benefits students who thrive through practical experience.

“Hands-on learning can help to boost engagement and retention for some students,” Ryan emphasises. “The pilot is being built with accessibility in mind, aimed to offer something for everyone.”

Powered by partnerships

The program is delivered in partnership between the HIA and the Department for Education, Children and Young People (DECYP) as part of the Youth Jobs Strategy.

This ensures that students receive support not only from their teachers and school, but also from Youth Career Facilitators and

industry professionals who offer mentoring and guidance.

Looking ahead

Ryan is excited about the potential impact on young people across Tasmania.

“youthBuild has the potential to open doors for young Tasmanians who want a future in building and construction” he says.

“They aren’t just learning skills – it’s about confidence, connecting and career discovery.”

The bottom line for students

If you’re a Year 9 or 10 student interested in the youthBuild program, Ryan’s message is clear:

“It’s practical, fun, and a great way to build confidence for whatever comes next. You get the chance to explore, experiment and excel while you’re still at school.”

“Try out trades, learn from professionals and build skills to help give you a heard start.  The program will help you figure out if building or construction is the right career path for you.”
