Getting your driver’s licence is a big step in life but for some young people, it can feel out of reach. That’s where Driving for Jobs comes in.
Driving for Jobs is a Tasmanian Government program that supports young people aged 16 to 19 in learning to drive safely and confidently. It’s especially helpful for students who face difficulties completing their required hours. By gaining driving skills, they can unlock new employment opportunities and build greater independence.
Launceston College student Celina, is one of many young Tasmanian’s to find success through the program.
“I’ve seen people who were really scared of driving become confident,” Celina said. “It’s not scary unless you make the wrong decision, and this program helps you make the right ones.”
Celina recently passed her P’s test on the first try. She says the program helped her feel ready, calm, and in control on the road.
“Everything is explained to you so clearly, and you get to see everyday examples of how to stay safe,” she said. “My family has noticed how much better I drive now. I’d definitely recommend it to my friends.”
The Driving for Jobs program offers more than just driving lessons. It helps build safer communities and brighter futures. Martin, a Project Officer from Launceston College, has seen first-hand how the program changes lives.
“The one-on-one support from instructors really helps each student,” Martin said. “And the confidence they get from driving shows up in other areas too, like schoolwork and friendships.”
For many students, getting their licence is key to getting a job. Employers often need drivers, and young people with a licence stand out from the crowd.
“Students are so grateful to be part of this program. They know it gives them a better chance at work and life,” said Martin.
The Driving for Jobs program is part of Tasmania’s Towards Zero road safety plan. It gives priority to disadvantaged students. It ensures those who need it most get the support they need to succeed.
So, if you’re learning to drive and want to feel more confident, safer, and ready for the future, take it from Celina –
“This program really works. It made a huge difference for me, and it could for you too.”
Ready for the road – and for life
Driving for Jobs is helping students like Celina gain the skills and confidence to get their licence and unlock a world of opportunity. For young people facing barriers, this targeted support can be life-changing, opening doors to employment and independence.
The program is currently available at four of our DECYP schools:
- Jordan River Learning Federation – Senior School
- Claremont College
- Newstead College
- Launceston College
If you’re at one of these schools and want to build your driving skills in a supported environment, talk to your onsite Driving for Jobs Project Officer to learn how you can get involved.
But that’s not where the support ends. Across Tasmania, Learning Pathways programs are helping students in Years 9 to 12 explore careers, build job-ready skills, and take confident steps toward their future. Whether it’s through workplace learning, VET, or targeted initiatives like Driving for Jobs, we’re here to help every student find their path.
