Our approach to safeguarding

The Safe. Secure. Supported. Our Safeguarding Framework (PDF, 8.1MB) describes DECYP’s approach to safeguarding children and young people from abuse.

It supports DECYP’s implementation of Tasmania’s Child and Youth Safe Standards and the Universal Principal for Aboriginal Cultural Safety.

This applies to all areas of DECYP. All workers must comply with their legal obligations and the department’s requirements for safeguarding children and young people.

About the Office of Safeguarding Children and Young People

The Office of Safeguarding Children and Young People (the Office) provides oversight of DECYP’s efforts to be a child safe organisation.

as part of this, the Office provides the department and individual work areas with support regarding policy development, risk identification, workforce development and training initiatives.

Our work is guided by DECYP’s framework for safeguarding children and young people – Safe. Secure. Supported. Our Safeguarding Framework (PDF, 8.1MB) and underpinned by the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child.

Key work includes:

  • supporting implementation of the Safe. Secure. Supported. Our Safeguarding Framework (PDF, 8.1MB) and Tasmania’s Child and Youth Safe Standards within DECYP
  • progressing activities connected with recommendations from:
    • the Commission of Inquiry into the Tasmanian Government’s Responses to Child Sexual Abuse in Institutional Settings,
    • the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse, and
    • the Independent Inquiry into DoE’s Responses to Child Sexual Abuse.
  • developing:
    • Safeguarding training for DECYP workers and guidance information on topics such as reporting concerns about children and young people, and
    • web-based resources, such as the Tell Someone website – a resource to help children, young people and adults with experience of child abuse find the help they need.
