Child and Student Wellbeing is a key priority for our department. The department’s Child and Student Wellbeing Strategy underpins our current and future efforts to keep children and young people safe, well and engaged in learning, across all our learning environments and adopts the six ARACY wellbeing domains.  Find out more about our approach to wellbeing.

The Student Wellbeing and Engagement Survey (SWES) is an annual survey completed by students in Years 4 – 12 in all eligible Tasmanian government schools. The SWES provides critical measures of student wellbeing through the voice of our learners.

The Survey data informs our school and system planning, our policies and services, and efforts to support the wellbeing of children and young people across Government.

The 2025 Student Wellbeing and Engagement Survey (SWES) recorded the highest participation rate to date, with 28,392 students undertaking the survey in Term 3 2025.

Student Wellbeing 2025

The annual Student Wellbeing & Engagement Survey provides critical measures of student wellbeing through the voice of our learners. The Survey data informs our school and system planning, our policies and services, and efforts to support the wellbeing of children and young people across Government.

The table below shows annual data for the proportion of respondents in Years 4-12 showing medium or high wellbeing across four key wellbeing domains as a proportion of all responses across the questions relating to each domain.

Overall, comparing statewide data from 2025 with 2021, (responses across all schools/year levels) indicates that results have either remained stable or shown consistent improvements over the last five years.

The survey provides useful data on the wellbeing and engagement of our students. It informs our approaches to student wellbeing at a school and system level.

2025 Student Wellbeing and Engagement Survey Data

Key results from the 2025 Survey include: 

Participating

  • 91% of students felt connected to adults in their home   
  • 89% of students felt they had good quality social support from peers 
  • 75% of students reported being resilient in challenging times 

Learning

  • 95% of students reported they had good relationships and support from their teachers 
  • 81% of students reported that they persist with classroom tasks to support their learning 
  • 82% of students that reported they persevere at tasks 

Loved, Safe and Valued

  • 89% of students felt connected to adults at school 
  • 86% of students feel safe at school most of the time 
  • 73% of students felt that teachers and students care about each other & treat each other with respect 

Material Basics

  • 69% of students reported having a good night’s sleep* 
  • 76% of students reported having a nutritional breakfast*   
  • 85% of students reported having participated in organised activities at least once a week 

* based on students reporting they had a good night’s sleep or ate breakfast at least three times a week 


Healthy

  • 81% of students reported being generally optimistic 
  • 25% of students reported they frequently worry about things at home and at school

Positive sense of culture & identity

  • 75% of students feel that they belong at their school   
  • 82% of students feel part of a group of friends and usually fit in with other students
