Change2Teaching
The Change2Teaching (C2T) program provides a two-year pathway for degree-qualified individuals to transition to a teaching career.
This is a chance to use the skills you already have to work with children and young people.
You will undertake a Master of Teaching through the University of Tasmania. You’ll earn a salary while you learn and gain practical teaching experience as a Department for Education Children and Young People (DECYP) employee.
C2T will be delivered in selected schools across Southern Tasmania and North‑West Tasmania.

- Gain two years of classroom experience with structured mentoring and supervision
- Work between two to four days per week in school, with remaining time for university and hub-based learning (five-day commitment)
- Receive support through regional hub schools (on-site study, mentoring, peer connection)
- Gradually increase teaching responsibility as skills and confidence grows
Transition to a permanent DECYP teaching role, upon successful completion.
Hub and Spoke Schools
C2T hub schools act as the central base for learning and professional support.
They will host the weekly hub-based study day and provide mentoring, coordination and opportunities for collaboration with others .
Change2Teaching spoke schools are the partner schools where participants undertake their paid school-based work, offering practical teaching experience in school settings.
The hub and spoke model delivers training and structured support with real-world practice across the program.

If I’m unsuccessful in my application for the C2T program, can I still apply for a Master of Teaching?
Yes. If you are not successful in your application for C2T, it does not affect your ability to apply for study with the University of Tasmania.
What is the purpose of the hubs?
C2T Hub Schools provide a welcoming, central place where participants come together at least once a week to learn, connect, and grow. These hubs foster a strong sense of community while supporting participants throughout their professional journey.
At each Hub, participants:
- Take part in their MTeach tutorials with an onsite UTAS tutor
- Access personalised one-on-one mentoring
- Engage in professional learning circles with peers
Together, these experiences will build confidence, strengthen skills, and create meaningful professional connections.
C2T Hub School locations:
- Claremont College (Southern Tasmania)
- Parklands High School (North-West Tasmania)
Will I receive leave entitlements?
C2T participants are employees of DECYP and will accrue leave on a pro‑rata basis, consistent with their part‑time employment hours.
Which school will I be placed at?
On successful completion of the program and the Master of Teaching, participants are offered permanent employment as a DECYP teacher.
Permanent placement is determined by system workforce needs at the time and may be in the participant’s host school or another Tasmanian Government school with an identified vacancy.
Can I choose a preference for what school I am placed at?
Yes. Participants are able to nominate location and school preferences as part of the application process.
While DECYP seeks to accommodate preferences where possible, placements are ultimately determined by workforce demand and school capacity.
Are program participants entitled to professional development?
Yes. Participants receive structured mentoring, hub based learning, and professional development as part of the program design.
What are the requirements for completing the Program?
Participants are expected to successfully complete all requirements of the Master of Teaching Program within the allocated timeframe. This is designed to be completed within the 2-year pilot period.
What happens if a participant does not complete the Master of Teaching?
If a participant is unable to complete the Master of Teaching, or does not pass a required subject within the 2-year timeframe, they may not meet the requirements to successfully complete the Program. In these situations, employment may end in line with the terms of their fixed-term appointment, and their pathway to permanency within the Department could be affected.
Can I change schools during the program?
Not usually. Placements are designed for continuity, but may change if necessary, due to operational reasons.
