Key information

  • Our priority is to keep children safely at home whenever possible.
  • If home isn’t safe, we help children find a safe, stable place to live, while staying connected to family, culture and community.
  • Young people who have a lived experience of Care (also known as out of home care) can help us to improve things by sharing their stories and ideas.

Listening to children and young people with Care experience

We know there is more work to do to improve the experiences and outcomes of children and young people in Care (also known as out of home care).

The best way to improve Care is to listen to the children and young people who have experienced it.

Children and young people with lived experience helped create Putting Children First: Our Child Safety Approach. It explains how we will deliver child-centred, rights-based and culturally responsive services to children, young people and families (including carers).

It is based on key principles. Click on a box below to hear a young person with Care experience explain what that principle means to them.

These audio stories were generously shared by young people with lived experience of Care.

Aboriginal self-determination – Aboriginal families and organisations lead decisions about Aboriginal children.

Accountable and responsible – decisions are transparent and reliable.

Child-centred and rights-based – the voices of children and young people guide decisions.

Safe, stable and well – Care is safe and supports wellbeing.

Connection – children maintain links to family, culture, school and community.

Trauma transformative – we understand trauma and create environments that support healing.
