Most students with disability attend their local school, closest to where they are living.
There are also a range of alternate educational settings including:
- Tasmanian eSchool
- Support Schools across the 3 regions of the state (South, North, North-West)
- Tier 4 Engagement Programs
Our Commitment
All students have the right to feel safe, supported, included and engaged in learning. Schools need to make sure that all students with disability have the support they need to learn and participate in all parts of school life.
In Tasmania almost all students with disability go to their local school. Our Educational Adjustments Disability Funding Model helps all schools make the educational adjustments required to support any student in any school.
There are also three Support Schools in Tasmania. Most students who attend Support Schools in Tasmania are moderated at the Extensive level of educational adjustments to support their access and engagement with education. Students may be eligible to attend a Support School when they have a significant disability, which includes a moderate to severe intellectual disability. The student may also have a severe physical disability and/or moderate to severe autism. There is a process once a year where a student can be nominated to attend a Support School. Use this Nomination for Placement at a State Support School form (PDF, 242KB). This process considers if the student is eligible to attend the support school. Nomination does not guarantee enrolment at the Support School
We are committed to helping all students learn through high quality inclusive education that makes sure all students access and participate in the Australian Curriculum in a way that meets their needs.
We value students and their school communities. We help schools to understand and respond to many different needs of students.
We work collaboratively to achieve positive outcomes for all students with disability.
We are guided by the Disability Standards for Education 2005. We make sure that all staff know their role in providing reasonable adjustments for students with disability so each student can join in and learn.
From 2024, we will develop a new Disability Inclusion Action Plan to align with the new Tasmanian Disability Inclusion Plan. Details of these new plans are outlined in the new Disability Inclusion Act 2023 for Tasmania

Support for students with disability is provided across the following key areas:
National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS)
We work with the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) to help students and their families access the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS). The NDIS supports Australians with a disability to have better life outcomes.
