Course description
The Term 3 secondary session: describes the ways that teachers can teach writing through explicit instruction and flexible scaffolding. Leaders will learn about the key elements of the writing progression, both sentence and text level, including:
– The different levels of writing
– The important of sentence level expression for extended text creation
– Techniques to develop sentence level writing throughout primary and secondary school
– How to adjust the level of scaffolding and extension for students at various levels of writing skill
– Scaffolds used for extended texts, including guidelines for their removal over time
– The role of background and text level knowledge in writing, and how this is developed over the course of a unit
– What to look for in implementation, and ways of supporting teachers to build their practice.
Course outcomes
Literacy leaders will be better prepared to lead the implementation of text-based units and guide school-level preparation for these units. They will have a deeper level of understanding about the text based units, their principles and how they can be implemented.
