Introducing a new registration process to volunteer or work with DECYP
If you are a volunteer, contractor, sub-contractor or other service provider you will soon be required to register your details and complete mandatory safeguarding checks through a new online process.
The registration process will include completion of mandatory safeguarding checks, including safeguarding training. This new safeguarding training will replace your previous safeguarding training certificate.
Who will need to register?:
You will need to register if you are engaged with DECYP as a:
- Volunteer
- Contractor/sub-contractor/consultant
- External Service Provider
- NDIS Provider (Registered or Non-Registered)
- External Support Provider
- Chaplain or Student Wellbeing Officer
Why are we introducing this new process
DECYP is committed to being a child safe organisation, and to ensuring that all Tasmanian children and young people are safe, secure and supported.
This means that we need to know the people who are working with and around children and young people, and ensure they have the relevant clearances and training.
What will registration involve?
Registrations will open soon.
The registration process is straightforward and will not take too much time.
If you are currently a volunteer, contractor, sub-contractor, consultant or other service provider, with a DECYP school or a Child and Family Learning Centre (CFLC), you will be sent an invitation to register, along with a link to the registration form.
The registration process will include:
- Validation of your Registration to Work with Vulnerable People (RWVP) number
- Completing annual Safeguarding Training (watching and acknowledging a 13-minute video)
- Acknowledging the DECYP Conduct and Behaviour Policy and Standards
What is the benefit for me?
- Only one registration across DECYP: If you work or volunteer at multiple DECYP sites, or in multiple roles, you will only need to provide your information once to be cleared to work anywhere in DECYP.
- Less administration: Your Registration remails valid for 12 months, reducing the need for you to provide evidence of your training or other clearances throughout the year.
- Helpful reminders: You will receive a notification before your registration expires. If you are continuing to volunteer or provide services to DECYP, you will be prompted to renew your registration.
Frequently Asked Questions
What if I do not have a Registration to Work with Vulnerable People (RWVP) number?
If you are a volunteer, contractor or other service provider who will be working at a site where children and young people are present, you must have a valid RWVP. You will need to have this to complete the registration process.
If you do not currently have a RWVP you can apply online on the Department of Justice website via the following link Apply | Registration to work with vulnerable people.
If you are a contractor or service provider who only works at DECYP sites where no children and young people are present (Corporate sites), you will be able to complete your registration without having a RWVP. Note: This registration type will restrict your access to corporate sites only, and you will not be cleared to access school, Child and Family Learning Centre or Libraries Tasmania sites.
I am a Parent/Caregiver. Do I need to register to attend my child’s school or Child and Family Learning Centre (CFLC)?
Parents and caregivers do not need to register if you are:
- Attending the DECYP site with your own children or to collect your own children
- Participating in DECYP events where you are only supporting your own children
You must register if you are volunteering or working with children other than your own.
I have already done the Safeguarding Training in 2026. Do I have to do it again when I register?
Yes. Completion of Safeguarding Training is a requirement for all DECYP workers. This new registration process includes completion of mandatory safeguarding checks and replaces the previous safeguarding training certificate.
You will need to complete the Safeguarding training as part of your registration even if you have already done this in 2026. This will involve viewing a 15-minute video, and acknowledging that you have watched and understood your safeguarding obligations.
I am feeling distressed at the prospect of completing the Safeguarding Training. What can I do?
If you are experiencing distress from the prospect of completing Safeguarding training, you or your DECYP contact officer should reach out to the Office of Safeguarding Children and Young People on safeguardingtraining@decyp.tas.gov.au.
The Office will discuss options with you, including the exemption process and how to best receive the training’s key messages in a way that supports your wellbeing.
What are the DECYP Conduct and Behaviour Policy and Standards?
These documents set out the standards of behaviour required of all DECYP workers. The standards have been developed to make sure you know what is expected of you, and that you actively contribute to keeping children and young people safe from harm.
They cover:
- the requirements for working in a Child Safe Organisation and how you must behave in interactions with children and young people
- expectations about working professionally with others
- obligations for managing departmental resources and information
- other legislated obligations you need to be aware of
Why do I have to read and acknowledge the DECYP Conduct and Behaviour Standards
DECYP is committed to being a Child Safe Organisation. We need to be sure that everyone who is part of our department understands and acknowledges the standards of behaviour required to keep children and young people safe from harm. We also need to be sure that all workers behave in a way that promotes respectful and professional relationships in DECYP workplaces.
