Key information
From 1 July 2026, when you call the Advice and Referral Line on 1800 000 123 you will be asked to:
- Press ‘1’ if you think a child or young person may be experiencing, or is at risk of experiencing, abuse or neglect. This option will take you to speak with a Child Safety specialist.
- Press ‘2’ if a family needs support, or if you are concerned about a child or young person’s wellbeing but there is no immediate threat to their safety. This option will take you to speak with a Family Referral specialist.
What is the Advice and Referral Line?
The Advice and Referral Line is Tasmania’s dedicated rapid screening and triage ‘front door’ for the Child Safety Service.
It is the place where people, including mandatory reporters, raise concerns about child neglect or abuse.
Child abuse can be:
- physical
- emotional
- sexual, and includes
- harm from family violence.
You can still call 1800 000 123 about child wellbeing matters. These calls will be directed to appropriate services and supports through the new Family Referral Hub.
What is the Family Referral Hub?
The Family Referral Hub plays an important role in connecting families with the services and supports they need. This is in cases when children or young people are experiencing ongoing safety concerns, but there is no immediate risk of harm. The Family Referral Hub works alongside the Child Safety Service and escalates concerns if risk increases.
The Family Referral Hub engages directly with families to:
- Understand their needs.
- Support the safety and wellbeing of children and young people.
- Strengthen caregiver capacity through exploration of strengths and networks.
- Connect families to appropriate services and supports.
