What is changing?

The Professional Learning Institute (PLI) located at 13 Timsbury Rd, Glenorchy is proposed to close on 31 December 2026. This means it will no longer be available as a dedicated training venue.

Why is it changing?

The closure of the Professional Learning Institute (PLI) as a site for training and program delivery is a budget and accommodation decision by the DECYP Executive Leadership Team.

When is it changing?

It is proposed the Professional Learning Institute (PLI) will be closed by 31 December 2026.

What will stay the same?

People and Culture will work with staff, service providers, contractors, user groups (teaching and non-teaching) and broader stakeholders to maintain continuity of programs and training.

DECYP remains committed to putting children and young people first, through workforce capability development.

What does this mean for existing training programs?

Current bookings and programs delivered at the Professional Learning Institute (PLI) will continue for the rest of the 2026 calendar year.

The leadership team will work with staff and stakeholders to develop quality alternate models for training and program delivery for 2027 onward.

What does this mean for future training programs?

The closure of the Professional Learning Institute (PLI) site does not mean the closure of learning and development services. It provides an opportunity to consider how learning is delivered to support our workforce across Tasmania.

As part of the transition, we will consider a range of delivery approaches, including face-to-face, virtual, hybrid, regional and workplace-based learning.

I have a booking for 2027 – what happens now?

Staff at the Professional Learning Institute (PLI) are contacting people and organisations who have made bookings for 2027. Staff will help identify other suitable training venues for existing bookings.

DECYP staff are encouraged to prioritise other DECYP owned sites as alternate venues for programs, training and meetings.

Options include conference rooms, large meeting rooms and training rooms available to book through Outlook Calendar.

Will DECYP continue to deliver training?

Yes. DECYP will continue to deliver training; however, there will no longer be a dedicated training site.

The focus is not on a single location for learning delivery, but on a flexible and statewide learning model that supports workforce capability development wherever employees are located.

What other DECYP training venue locations can be used?

DECYP has access to training venues located on DECYP sites. These options will be worked through as well as considering alternate training venues.

Will commercial training venues be used?

Commercial training venues will be considered on a need’s basis.

What does this mean for program design using Adult Learning Principles?

DECYP is committed to designing and delivering professional learning using established adult learning principles.

This means learning experiences are relevant, practical, evidence-based and learner-centred, recognising that adults learn best when they can draw on their own experience, apply learning directly to their work, learn collaboratively with others, reflect on practice and take ownership of their ongoing development.

Where will PLI staff work once the PLI is closed?

It is likely Professional Learning Institute (PLI) staff will co-locate with People and Culture colleagues at Level 1, 21 Kirksway Place, Battery Point. This will be worked through with staff.

Where can I find more information?

Information about DECYP training and programs will continue to be housed at Training and Development Hub – Department for Education, Children and Young People.

Any additional information and updates about the closure of the Professional Learning Institute (PLI) as a dedicated training venue will also be shared at Training and Development Hub – Department for Education, Children and Young People.
