First Year Teacher Induction Program

Course description

New teachers to the Department of Education and Young People (DECYP) will be inducted over an immersive three-day face-to-face program, in line with the Teachers Agreement 2023.

Participants will have an opportunity to connect with other First Year and new teachers to DECYP and the wider DECYP community while building the knowledge, skills and professional networks needed for a successful transition into teaching.

Subject matter experts will present relevant and timely sessions that will support a successful transition to the classroom, with topics including:

• Quality teaching and learning theories, strategies, and resources
• State Service Code of Conduct and Behaviour Expectations for teachers
• DECYP teaching and learning priorities, including ‘Lifting Literacy’ and ‘Strengthening Numeracy’
• Developing a positive and inclusive classroom culture
• DECYP’s organisational structure and values
• Practical strategies to prevent and respond to challenging behaviour and bullying, in line with DECYP policy and procedures
• Strategies to support staff wellbeing and an understanding of available supports
• Supporting First Nation learners and knowledge of teaching for all, by promoting inclusion, equity, and excellence, and planning for differentiation

Course outcomes

• Build a professional learning network with other First Year Teachers and the wider DECYP community
• Develop knowledge and capabilities to support classroom readiness and the transition into school life
• Deepen knowledge and understanding of the Department for Education, Children and Young People
• Understand the support and resources available for our teachers and how to access them
